A post is a dental restoration that is used to create retention to a tooth that has had a root canal. This retention is useful to hold a filling and eventually a crown as a final restoration to that tooth.
A post and core is a post that is covered by filling material, usually composite, not to reconstruct the whole tooth, but to give it a shape to be able to receive a crown on it.
