Ankylosis of a tooth occurs when the tooth has already erupted into the mouth but the cementum or dentin has fused with the alveolar bone, making that tooth difficult to exfoliate naturally, and complicated to extract. This may cause a person to retain a primary tooth instead of having it replaced by the corresponding permanent one.
