Carthage
| Carthage, once the most powerful Phoenician colony in North Africa, was built around 800 BCE. For several decades Carthage had been fighting Rome for control of the western Mediterranean. Their conflict, known as the Punic Wars, ended when Rome burned Carthage to the ground in 146 BC and crushed the last great center of Phoenician culture under the weight of its empire. |
