Chott el Djerid Salt Pan
|Tunisia is divided into two almost equal parts (North and South) by a succession of salt lakes (chotts), the largest of which is the Chott el Djerid. Due to the extreme weather with annual rainfall of only 100 mm and temperatures reaching 50° C, water evaporates from the lake. In summer Chott el Djerid is almost entirely dried up, and frequent mirages are noted to appear.|
